Class of 2020: I treated myself to this class bracelet in lieu of a college ring

I was honored when the vice president of student affairs at my college asked me to record a video to share how I got through cancer treatment and classes with incoming students this semester. I, along with four other students, offered up my story as a way for others to take inspiration on how to get through college while facing challenges, from Covid-19 and beyond. Below is the original script I wrote for the video.

Hi Privateers,

My name is Christy Lorio and I am a current UNO student and alumni.

I’m starting an MFA in Studio Art (Photography) this semester; I also graduated this past May with an MFA in Creative Writing and I have Bachelor’s Degrees in English and Film & Theatre, all from UNO. I also happen to have stage IV cancer.

This fall we are facing challenges that we’ve never faced before. Whether you’re starting college for the first time or you’re returning for your final semester, the pandemic brings an added layer of uncertainty to the college experience, but that doesn’t mean your academic career needs to suffer because of it.

I’ve been a UNO student off and on since 1999. Right after high school I studied for a year at a community college, then enrolled in UNO as a sophomore. In 2001, my dad died from colorectal cancer. I sat out a semester after his death, then…
